Concept and early development. Jay Miner joined Atari, Inc. in the 1970s to develop custom integrated circuits, and led development of the Atari 2600's TIA. Almost as soon as its development was complete, the team began developing a much more sophisticated set of chips, CTIA, ANTIC and POKEY, that formed the basis of the Atari 8-bit family.
There was a brief test market in ’84, but the combined effects of the infamous early-1980s video game crash and the sale of Atari Inc. from Time Warner to Jack Tramiel put a halt on an immediate wide release. In the aftermath, Atari Inc. became Atari Corp., and the 7800 was placed on the back burner until 1986.

Some of Atari's arcade systems used multi-core versions of POKEY that placed 2 or 4 POKEY chips in a single package allowing more sound voices. I, Robot was an arcade game produced by Atari in 1983. It was designed by Dave Theurer (of Tempest fame) and was a very innovative and creative game. Unfortunately Atari did not sell a lot of them. It is believed that Atari only produced 1000 I,Robot machines.

Atari displayed its long-awaited and freshly branded retro console at GDC 2018. @rrhoover Kinda doubt this is the same thing, but I got a pitch over the weekend about the Atari and Sega Flashback systems that are basically like the NES Classic (built in emulator).
